Tim Ferris and The Rise of Virtual Assistants

Tim Ferris, the author of The 4-Hour Workweek is in a lot of way responsible for the current rise in popularity of virtual assistants. He has shown how transformational having a virtual assistant is. Every facet of your life can be outsourced. Yes, he has taken it to the extreme, even outsourcing his dating. If you go to his website, you will see other people experimenting on how anything can be outsourced. I don’t necessarily advocate that you outsource everything but check out the website. It might give you an idea or two. The important thing is business and even personal tasks can be outsourced. It all depends on how comfortable you are in delegating task to another person.

Business people and entrepreneurs too often struggle with tasks like bookkeeping, blog writing or preparing newsletters. Why struggle to do these tasks? Assuming your hourly rate is $50 (On a side note, I greatly suggest entrepreneurs to calculate how much they are worth per hour), why not just outsource these task to a company who will only charge you $17 per hour to finish those task. They can even do it faster than you, saving you money as you can more productively use your time on higher paying tasks. Best of all, you can focus your time on what you do best.

What is the first step then in getting a virtual assistant? First thing is for you to think through everything you are doing. What are the things you hate to do? What are the things you love to do? What are the things you are putting off and haven’t done. List down everything you don’t like doing and those you’ve put off and haven’t done. These are the things you should outsource to your virtual assistants.

When you outsource, trust is very important in the relationship. You must have a mindset wherein you can comfortably delegate tasks to another person. People who tends to micromanage must learn how to delegate and trust their virtual assistants. Otherwise, virtual assistance will not work for them. Once you and your virtual assistant learn to work together effectively, a good partnership is born. The benefit of the relationship is fully realized by the entrepreneur.

I read the Tim Ferris book “4 hour workweek” and certainly it is a highly recommended book. It has opened my eyes on a new way of thinking regarding virtual assistants and the VA industry in general.
